Description
In the south of Algeria, in Timimoun, a town 1,200 km from the capital Algiers, Abdelhamid Hadj carefully maintains an ancient irrigation system, known as 'foggara', that collects underground water and distributes it for agriculture in the oasis. The 'foggara' consists of slightly sloping galleries equipped with an aeration system that drains the water to irrigate crops in the oasis. According to Abdelhamid Hadj, who is in charge of maintaining the 'foggara', the inhabitants of this arid zone take great care of this ancestral system in Timimoun, which is over 800 years old.
