Description
People in Zamimpilo, an informal settlement near the South African city of Johannesburg, are living in fear amidst high levels of crime linked to the illegal mining of gold ore and the gangs involved in the business. "You are also afraid and experiencing trauma and all that, when walking always looking behind you, wondering if you will wake up alive tomorrow," says Lutho Makheyi, a 21-year-old resident. Illegal mines are seen as a hotbed for crime in a country where more than 80 people are murdered every day. Tackling crime is one of the key issues in the May 29 general election which is set to be the tightest in decades. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
