Description
Every week in a small, mostly Indigenous town in the Bolivian Amazon, 78-year-old Hildeberto Oreyai goes to his workshop to make violins, a craft known as luthiering that has been in his family for several generations. Not far from his shop in Urubicha, dozens of others are either learning the craft of violin making or playing the instrument.
With a musical history dating back to the 19th century, when Franciscan missionaries used violins in church to evangelize the population, the town has become an unexpected center of violin making. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
