On a mattress on the floor of Porto Alegre's largest shelter, Rafael Adriano Peres struggles to move: he was hit by a car in the early hours of the historic flooding in southern Brazil. By the time he left the hospital with two broken ribs, his wife had evacuated their small flooded home. Reunited, Peres, 35, and Mara, 45, hug each other. "I don't know what tomorrow will be like," says the thin man, who made his living as an informal garbage collector in the lower part of the town, still flooded by the overflowing Guaiba River.
