Description
"We have been lied to for years," Yamel is bitterly convinced. "Our ancestors have been lied to, our elders have been lied to," adds the pro-independence activist. That's why he and the other "big brothers" from a Kanak stronghold in Noumea support the growing anger in the Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia, believing that the aspirations for independence are legitimate. The Pacific territory of 270,000 people has been in turmoil since May 13, when violence erupted over plans to give voting rights to thousands of non-indigenous residents, which Kanaks say will dilute their votes.
