A boat trip in the Taiwan Strait, setting off from the Taipei-administered outlying island of Kinmen, lets tourists see islands between Kinmen and the Chinese city of Xiamen. On a clear day, skyscrapers from across the strait can be seen from the boat. Kinmen is only five kilometres (three miles) away from mainland China. China launched war games three days after Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te was sworn into office, sending warplanes, naval vessels and coast guard ships to encircle Taiwan and its outlying islands -- including Kinmen -- for two days.
