Description
Amnesty International's annual report on the global use of the death penalty finds that the number of recorded executions in 2023 was at its highest since 2015, with 1,153 judicial killings known to have taken place. A sharp rise in executions in Iran contributed to the figure, while the number of killings in China is not included in the report as the figure is unknown. Overall there is a trend towards fewer countries using the death penalty, even if the number executed remains stubbornly high, the UK-based rights NGO said. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
