The New Caledonian capital of Noumea is only 160 kilometres to the south, but the small town of Bourail seems a world away. Pro-independence mobilisation has been strong here since the start of the unrest that has shaken the archipelago, and the roadblocks on the island's main thoroughfare make everyday life difficult, but nothing seems to have shaken the tranquillity of the town.
