In mid-May, the Congolese military (FARDC) and the local armed groups collaborating with them gave access to film positions on the front line overlooking the town of Kibirizi under the control of the M23 rebels and the Rwandan army. This area, located around ten kilometres south of Kanyabayonga, is a crossroads between the main roads in North Kivu and a lock on the rebels' advance northwards. Since 28 May, it has been under the control of the M23 and the Rwandan army. Fighting has been going on in the town of Kanyabayonga itself since 31 May, as the Congolese army loses ground and the population flees ever further north. IMAGES
