Description
In the north of France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia, mines have been closed since the riots began, but the sector's crisis goes back further. The Koniambo Nickel (KNS) site at Voh, near the town of Kone, has been idle for more than three months, waiting for a buyer. The plant normally employs 1,300 people. At present, fewer than 100 of them are keeping the plant afloat, despite the lack of production, in order to avoid a total shutdown that would condemn the facilities for good. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
