Description
Brazil's Environment Secretary Marina Silva warns about the increase of desertification in Brazil due to global warming, calling for a "reaction" to put a stop to it amid worsening droughts.
The minister makes the comments during an event with the executive secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Ibrahim Thiaw, in the town of Petrolina (Pernambuco, northeast), in Caatinga. Researchers recently detected Brazil's first arid region and projected the expansion of semi-arid lands in a large part of the territory, UN Brazil said in a statement. Some 38 million Brazilians could suffer the effects of desertification and drought, which threatens 1.4 million square kilometers of territory, an area larger than Peru. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
