Description
Fireworks and flames fill the night sky as the southeastern Brazilian town of Ingai celebrates the 92nd edition of its Sao Joao Batista bonfire festival, which centres around the burning of a 38-meter structure. The event traces its roots back to 1931, when lightning struck Ingai's church, causing a fire that almost destroyed the entire building. "This is too much emotion here" says Matheus Costa, a data analyst attending the festival, which draws up to 20 thousand people to Ingai, a town of just two thousand. The bonfire's preparation begins three months in advance and uses only wood from reforestation projects. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
