Description
Teams work around the clock at the Estadio Beira-Rio in southern Brazil after devastating floods caused more than five million US dollars worth of damage to the ground, according to club officials. "The stadium is expected to reopen next month, in July," says Sport Club Internacional official Gabriel Nunes. The stadium, which can hold more than 50,000 spectators, hosted five games at the 2014 World Cup.
Three months' worth of rain was dumped on the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul over two weeks in an "extremely rare event, expected to occur only once every 100-250 years," according to a study published by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group. The disaster left 172 people dead and displaced around 600,000. The Brazilian football league was suspended for two weeks due to the floods, while Gremio and Internacional -- both based in Porto Alegre -- are yet to play a home match since. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
