Human rights lawyer Steven Donziger calls on US President Joe Biden to pardon him during a protest outside the White House. The environmental rights defender represented Ecuadoran Amazon communities in years-long legal actions against Chevron. In 2011, an Ecuadoran court ruled that the US oil giant was liable for environmental damage in its Amazon basin region by sister company Texaco. The enforcement of the $9.5 billion judgement was later blocked by US appeals court. In 2019, Steven Donziger was charged for contempt of court following a lawsuit brought by Chevron and later sentenced to six months in prison. "Right now people are scared. Their advocacy is being chilled by the fear that they also could be locked up by a fossil fuel company like I was," he shares. "By correcting the injustice for me, (Joe Biden) is really going to be sending a signal to the whole climate justice movement that I will protect you from these types of corporate attacks", he adds.
