Recently reintroduced to the wild after disappearing 400 years ago, beavers are dividing Scots as they boost wildlife and even tourism but also damage some farmland with their activities. Described as "nature's engineers", beavers are quick to create wetlands and re-route waterways, which can alleviate flooding. However their work is not appreciated everywhere: farmer Douglas Neill has had floodbanks damaged and pipes blocked by beavers, causing more than £2 million worth of damage to his farmland, he estimates.
