Description
Hurricane Beryl, which has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, "is an illustration of what we can expect in the future" says Anne-Claire Fontan, tropical cyclone scientific officer at the World Meteorological Organization. "We are expecting more violent systems, associated with much more rain" she adds, explaining that global warming means "the atmosphere can hold more moisture", feeding more intense tropical storms. Beryl, which has killed at least seven people, is the first storm since US National Hurricane Center records began to reach Category 4 level in June and the earliest to reach Category 5 in July.
