"It is essential that the journalist Jose Ruben Zamora be released as part of the effort to achieve democratic normality in the country," says the director of Reporters Without Borders' (RSF) Latin America bureau in Guatemala City after visiting the journalist in prison. Jose Ruben Zamora Marroquin, founder of the now closed Guatemalan newspaper El Periodico and an outspoken critic of corruption, has been imprisoned since 2022 on charges of money laundering in a controversial trial.
