A family puts their house in order in Ecuador's violent coastal town of Durán, near Guayaquil, recently reclaimed from drug traffickers who imposed a cruel extortion: paying to keep their home. "They wanted me to pay $2,000" in exchange for supposedly "protecting" the residence that was under construction, says the owner, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. The authorities recovered the house for this family, as they have for many other victims of a new form of extortion in Ecuador, where illegal organizations take over strategic neighborhoods for drug trafficking and crime.
