Some of Italy's beach operators, currently in legal limbo, close their colourful umbrellas in a short strike at the height of the summer season, as a longstanding battle rages over whether they will continue to enjoy concessions often passed down through generations. "We cannot invest because we do not know how we will end up and what the future holds for our companies," says beach operator Antonio Meneghini.
