Description
Despite the military and political importance of the Allied landings in Provence for the Liberation of France, they remain marginal in collective memories and virtually absent from history textbooks. Unlike the D-Day landings in Normandy, French troops made up the majority of the 350,000 men involved in Provence. Most of the 250,000 Free French soldiers came from French overseas colonies in Africa. On the 75th anniversary of the Provence landings, Emmanuel Macron called on mayors to name streets after soldiers who had come from the colonies to liberate France. Five years on, the results are still meagre, even though many communes celebrate the memory of these troops. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
