Description
Once erected as a tribute to Kaiser Wilhelm I, Thuringia's Kyffhaeuser monument has become a popular meeting point for members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). As the former East German state prepares to hold a key regional election on September 1, the Green party is struggling against the AfD, which is leading opinion polls. For Madeleine Henfling, the Green party's top candidate in Thuringia, it is important "to oppose the extreme right, particularly the AfD, appropriating this monument."
