Description
It has been 30 years since two young men from Western Sahara arrived on the shores of Spain's Canary Islands -- the first in an ever-growing procession of migrants from Africa. The archipelago received a record 39,910 migrants in 2023, a figure it is on track to surpass this year. "In the past, only men came, mainly between the ages of 17 and 18 and up to a maximum of 25. But now whole families can come on a boat", explains José Antonio Rodriguez Verona, one of the regional heads of the Red Cross. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
