A year after flooding in eastern Libya's Derna devastated entire neighbourhoods, the death toll remains contested and labs are still conducting DNA analyses to identify victims. Officials have said around 3,800 people were killed in the floods, but victims' families believe many more died. Kamal al-Siwi, head of the General Authority for the Search and Identification of Missing Persons, says the latest toll totalling 3,734 deaths is based on deaths reports from victims' families and "the number of bodies found, whether in houses submerged by the floods, in dwellings submerged by the waters, in the sea or on the banks of the wadi."
