Description
A Hindu family in the suburbs of India’s financial capital Mumbai built a Ganesha shrine for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival that aims to raise awareness about sexual violence in the country, after the rape and murder last month of a 31-year-old doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College And Hospital in Kolkata. The discovery of the doctor's bloodied body at a state-run hospital stoked nationwide anger at the chronic issue of violence against women, and sparked strikes by medics and rallies backed by thousands of ordinary citizens across India. "We are not protected. We are not secure in our own country," says 19-year-old Sneha Thorave, an aspiring medical student who built the elephant god shrine with help from her parents.
