Description
As part of the International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 21, volunteers descend on the historic Robben Island Coastline with bags in hand to gather plastic and other waste that washed up on the beach and between the rocks and shrubs. Robben Island is a world heritage site and is mostly known for its most famous prisoner Nelson Mandela. More than one hundred volunteers took the thirty-minute ferry ride from the Table Bay harbour to participate in the cleanup. Robben Island is home to penguins and has a buffer of one nautical mile which is a protected marine area. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
