Description
Scores of people go for a Sunday walk to check out the state of the Opava river in northeastern Czech Republic, whose level has risen sharply amid heavy floods. The region was one of the hardest-hit by the floods due to heavy rain that started on Friday and only ceased on Sunday morning. The Opava flooded the lower parts of the eponymous city with population of 56,000. It peaked at 1700 GMT, putting a major road bridge at a serious risk of collapse. Elsewhere in the Czech Republic, the floods disrupted road and railway traffic and caused extensive power outages. Four people have been reported missing so far. Floods have also hit other central European countries including Austria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. IMAGES
