Description
Every day, vendors walk the sands of some of Rio de Janeiro's most beautiful beaches, lugging metal containers filled with the tea-like beverage mate. "Drinking mate is part of Rio de Janeiro's culture," says Arthur Jorge, 47, as he scouts for customers. The vendor, who has used plastic for as long as he can remember, acknowledges the environmental impact of single-use plastic, but "it's complicated" to find affordable alternatives, he says.
As Brazil ranks as the fourth largest producer of plastic waste in 2019, the country's Congress is considering legislation that would ban all single-use plastics. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
