Description
With a flat chock-full of Mao memorabilia, from floor-to-ceiling tall statues to minature inscriptions only visible with a magnifying glass, Feng Gang is proud to be one of China's leading "red collectors".
These collectors of "red relics" -- objects made between 1921 with the founding of the Chinese Communist Party to 1976 when revolutionary leader Mao Zedong died -- believe they are helping to preserve memories of their nation's founding decades.
"Red collection is not like collecting other antiques. This is because red items are even greater than antiques. Why? Because they have an educational function: enlightening society," Feng, 53, tells AFP at his home in Baotou, Inner Mongolia before he heads off to an annual convention of relic collectors in China's capital Beijing.
