Description
Croatia is taking steps to protect Jewish cemeteries after decades of neglect that saw the remains of nearly 3,000 people exhumed in Zagreb's main Mirogoj cemetery. During World War II, under the country's pro-Nazi government, the Jewish community practically vanished, but now the ruling conservatives have announced that a total of 52 cemeteries will be protected as "memorial heritage". "We are perhaps the first country in Europe to decide on the collective protection of memorial heritage," says Croatia's Culture and Media Minister, Nina Obuljen Korzinek. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
