Description
Bustling around a market and greeting supporters in the Molenbeek area of Brussels, Fouad Ahidar is stirring up controversy in Belgian politics. Something of a rising star on the Belgian left, the 50-year-old's message is overtly aimed at the Muslim vote that blends kitchen table issues with tough talk on Gaza or the right to wear a headscarf. Critics say Ahidar's style of politics risks deepening divisions in a city that needs to work to integrate its large Muslim population. Ahidar rejects the suggestion, declaring, "Everyone is welcome with us", adding, "It's just that we're campaigning and touching on themes that may be important to certain communities."
