Description
Shouts of “Korale! Korale!” ring out on the streets of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, as scrap collectors hunt for everything from used jerry cans to electronics to shoes. The unwanted items are then sold to middlemen in Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, where they’re given a new lease on life. "Plastics are recycled into products like plates and jars, while metals are sent to factories, melted down, and recycled into building steel," explains scrap collector Mikiyas Mesele.
