Description
Following the UN Security Council's failed visit to the remote Indigenous village of Nabusimake in Colombia's Sierra Nevada mountains, the Arhuaco indigenous people express growing concern about the environment and the worsening impact of global warming. "It was fundamental for us that the Security Council come to this place in Nabusimake, to observe nature and natural life," says Leonor Zalabata, ambassador of Colombia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations and a member of the community.
The village, made of stone and mud houses, is considered the "capital" of the Arhuaco territory, which is home to about 8,000 inhabitants. The "Mamos" spiritual leaders meet with other community members to discuss the future of both the Sierra Nevada and the "Mother Earth," seeing life as a fragile natural balance to be preserved.
