Beirut's creaky roads, waste and water networks are struggling to support tens of thousands of displaced people who have sought safety in the capital as Israeli air strikes pound the country. "It used to take me just 7 to 10 minutes to reach the Hamra street [in downtown Beirut], but now it takes me an hour," says a taxi driver. A year of cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah exploded into all-out war on September 23, with Israel heavily bombarding Hezbollah strongholds in the country's east, south and Beirut's southern suburbs, sending many people fleeing to the capital.
