Description
The drought impacting parts of South America, combined with public pressure, is prompting technology giants like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft to adjust their data center projects in the region to prioritize low water consumption.
Last month Google announced that the data center it was planning to build in the town of Cerrillos, southeast of Santiago, would use "air cooling technology" that would reduce its water use to a minimum. "Unfortunately, the impact of data centers on water consumption and their cooling systems is significan," says Rodrigo Vallejos, member of the Social and Environmental Resistance of Quilicura.
