Description
All that remains of the Bento Rodrigues neighborhood in northeastern Brazil is mining waste and mud. It has been nearly a decade since a dam mine collapsed, killing 19 people, including five-year-old Emanuele. Her mother is one of 700 people left homeless and still waiting for compensation.
"What would relieve me is to see them behind bars, but that won't happen because they have power and money," she says, as Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP now hopes to secure a $25.7 billion (23 billion euros) settlement for the victims. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
