Description
Only a few kilometres separate Ukraine's northeastern town of Vovchansk from the Russian border. With a population of almost 20,000 before the war, the city now lies in ruins following an intense Russian bombing campaign and a ground assault in May 2024. "Ninety percent of the city is completely destroyed," says Vovchansk mayor Tamaz Gambarashvili, who is now based in Kharkiv, like many residents who managed to flee. "You could say that the city almost no longer exists." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
