Description
As Germany readies to mark 35 years since the Berlin Wall fell, a little man in a hat telling pedestrians when to cross the street -- a symbol of the former communist East -- has become an icon of reunification. East Germany's "Ampelmann" or pedestrian "traffic light man" is now instantly recognisable thanks to his chunky outline and wide-brimmed hat. "This character doesn't have a perfect body or perfect proportions," says graphic designer and professor Fons Hickmann, adding, "This is a very modern sign in the sense of body positivism."
