Description
When Nayib Bukele first ran for president, Reynaldo Santos Vanegas hoped for change in his then-violent country. "I thought he was targeting gang members, not innocent people," he says of the leader's strict security measures and mass incarceration.
Now, a few months after the Salvadoran president was sworn in for a second term, Santos Vanegas is crying out for help from the government he once supported. The 57-year-old is one of many relatives of the more than 81,000 people detained since March 2022 who are demanding proof of life for their loved ones. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
