Description
Social movements and activists gather in Rio de Janeiro for the G20 Social Summit, an unprecedented initiative by the Brazilian government ahead of the summit of world leaders. "We're the ones who participate in every situation daily. Our voices are essential for the population, and even the government, to understand these needs," says 62-year-old security guard Claudio Oliveira.
The three-day event is the brainchild of Brazil's leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, aiming to include civil society in the meetings scheduled between the leaders of the world's major economies. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
