Description
Legal analyst Eric Lai says the sentencing of dozens of democracy campaigners in Hong Kong shows that the courts in the city are "in line" with the government. Lai, a research fellow at Georgetown Center for Asian Law, describes the defendants as "political prisoners".
A Hong Kong court has jailed all 45 defendants convicted of subversion in the city's largest national security trial, with "mastermind" Benny Tai receiving the longest term of 10 years. The case relates to an informal poll staged in 2020 as part of a strategy to win a pro-democracy electoral majority. SOUNDBITES
