Beijing "firmly opposes" reported contingency plans by the US for military deployments in Japan and the Philippines in case of an emergency over Taiwan. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Monday Washington was "using the Taiwan issue as an excuse to strengthen regional military deployment".
