Taiwan President Lai Ching-te leaves Saturday on a week-long tour of the Pacific that includes a stopover in Hawaii, which has ignited fiery threats from Beijing.
"I will continue to expand cooperation and deepen partnerships with our allies based on the values of democracy, peace and prosperity, so that the world can see that Taiwan is not only a model of democracy but also a key force in promoting the development of peace, stability and prosperity around the world," Lai says at the airport before departing.
