Description
Hundreds of migrants set off from southern Mexico in the hope of reaching the United States before Donald Trump takes office for a second term as US president. "We have to get a move on, we don't know what measures he is going to take," says one Venezuelan migrant walking with the caravan, the third to leave Chiapas state since the November 5 election.
Trump has vowed to impose tariffs on neighbors Mexico and Canada since his election, blaming them for not stemming for not stemming the flow of undocumented migrants. The number of US border patrol encounters with migrants crossing over from Mexico illegally fell to around 54,000 in September, from a peak of nearly 250,000 in December 2023, according to the US government.
