Description
Illegal mining, known locally as "galamsey", has contaminated Ghana's rivers, destroyed forests and farmland, and created major health risks for people — making it a crucial issue ahead of the upcoming general election on 7 December. Keeping in mind the reality of high unemployement and poverty, activists are urging better government regulation. "I am not saying that stop mining, I am saying that stop mining illegally or stop mining that hurt us," says environmental activist, Clement Abaidoo. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
