Description
The Islamist-led rebels who toppled Syria's government are showing "encouraging" signs of a more moderate approach, but need to prove that this is the case, says an analyst. "All the signs have been that HTS do not want to rule alone," says Chatham House associate fellow Bader Mousa Al-Saif, who adds "they've been talking about opening up the process, having a political pathway forward". "The next few days are very critical to really understanding if this will be the case or not." The Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group which led the assault to topple Bashar al-Assad's government is designated as a terrorist organisation by Western governments and the European Union.
