Description
In the turquoise waters of Guna Yala's Caribbean archipelago, a rusty, half-sunken ferry stands out among the shipwrecks threatening navigation and the environment off Panama's coast.
While experts, locals, and authorities see pollution and danger, diver Jean Carlos Blanco sees an opportunity: creating artificial reefs and boosting tourism.
From an abandoned sailboat near Puerto Lindo in Portobelo, Blanco tells AFP that vessels of all sizes, from large ferries to small boats, can be treated to become habitats for fish, corals, and other marine species. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
