Description
A decade ago, Macau's Tap Seac Square was packed with people clamouring for change and government accountability -- the high-water mark for the former Portuguese colony's political awakening.
But as Macau prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of its handover to China this week, the city's democracy movement is all but over.
"Macau's civil society is indeed relatively docile and obedient", says Au Kam-san, one of Macau's longest-serving pro-democracy legislators, adding that "young people have their own views".
Jorge Rangel, a minister in Macau's final colonial administration, says the government "has only to gain", if it can be more open to civic participation, as he recounts the city's handover to China.
