Description
El Salvador's Congress approves a bill pushed by President Nayib Bukele that proposes the reintroduction of metallic mining in the country, which was banned in 2017. "The General Law on Metallic Mining is approved" with the votes of 57 lawmakers (out of a total of 60), says Ernesto Castro, head of the Congress, dominated by the ruling party. Protesters, activists gathered outside the Congress against the reintroduction of mining. Protesters and activists fear that reintroducing mining will pollute the Lempa River, which supplies water to 70% of the capital and nearby cities. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
