Billie, a well-fed ginger cat, sleeps outstretched on the couch of a Ukrainian military unit in the Donetsk region as the sound of artillery booms in the background. Lokhmatyi, a 24-year-old drone unit member of Kurt & Company, part of Ukraine’s 28th brigade, dotes over the tomcat, saying that when the unit’s female cat had kittens, they "chose the most powerful one," picking Billie out of the litter and bringing him to their home base. “We brought him here, spoilt him a little bit, and now he bites, scratches, and attacks us,” Lokhmatyi laughs.
