Police officers patrol the streets of Berlin as people set off fireworks to celebrate New Year. Across Germany, five people died in accidents linked to fireworks and in the capital, a police officer was severely injured. Some 330 people were detained in Berlin overnight, but police added that contrary to previous years, "there were no major violence or incidents". IMAGES
